Untethered by time, [God] sees us all. From the backwoods of Virginia to the business district of London; from the Vikings to the astronauts, from the cave-dwellers to the kings, from the hut-builders to the finger-pointers to the rock-stackers, he sees us. Vagabonds and ragamuffins all, he saw us before we were born. And he loves what he sees. Flooded by emotion. Overcome by pride, the Starmaker turns to us, one by one, and says, “You are my child. I love you dearly. I’m aware that someday you’ll turn from me and walk away. But I want you to know, I’ve already provided you a way back.” And to prove it, he did something extraordinary. Stepping from the throne, he removed his robe of light and wrapped himself in skin: pigmented, human skin. The light of the universe entered a dark, wet womb. He who angels worship nestled himself in the placenta of a peasant, was birthed into the cold night, and then slept on cow’s hay. Mary didn’t know whether to give him milk or give him praise, but she gave him both since he was, as near as she could figure, hungry and holy. Joseph didn’t know whether to call him Junior or Father. But in the end called him Jesus, since that’s what the angel said and since he didn’t have the faintest idea what to name a God he could cradle in his arms. “Can anything make me stop loving you?” God asks. “Watch me speak your language, sleep on your earth, and feel your hurts. Behold the maker of sight and sound as he sneezes, coughs, and blows his nose. You wonder if I understand how you feel? Look into the dancing eyes of the kid in Nazareth; that’s God walking to school. Ponder the toddler at Mary’s table; that’s God spilling his milk. “You wonder how long my love will last? Find your answer on a splintered cross, on a craggy hill. That’s me you see up there, your maker, your God, nail-stabbed and bleeding. Covered in spit and sin-soaked. That’s your sin I’m feeling. That’s your death I’m dying. That’s your resurrection I’m living. That’s how much I love you.”

The Winsomeness of Holiness by Max Lucado John the Baptist would never get hired today. No church would touch him. He was a public relations disaster. He “wore clothes made from camel’s hair, had a leather belt around his waist, and ate locusts and wild honey” (Mark 1:6). Who would want to look at a guy like that every Sunday? No, John would never get hired today. His tactics lacked tact. His style wasn’t smooth. He made few friends and lots of enemies, but what do you know? He made hundreds of converts. “All the people from Judea and Jerusalem were going out to him. They confessed their sins and were baptized by him in the Jordan River” (Mark 1:5). Look at that. “All the people of Judea and Jerusalem.… ” How do we explain such a response? It certainly wasn’t his charisma or clothing. Nor was it his money or position, for he had neither. Then what did he have? One word. Holiness. John the Baptist set himself apart for one task, to be a voice of Christ. Everything about John centered on his purpose. His dress. His diet. His actions. His demands. He reminded his hearers of Elijah. And he reminds us of this truth: “There is winsomeness in holiness.” You don’t have to be like the world to have an impact on the world. You don’t have to be like the crowd to change the crowd. You don’t have to lower yourself down to their level to lift them up to your level. Nor do you have to be weird. You don’t need to wear camel’s-hair clothing or eat insects. Holiness doesn’t seek to be odd. Holiness seeks to be like God. You want to make a difference in your world? Live a holy life: Be faithful to your spouse. Be the one at the office who refuses to cheat. Be the neighbor who acts neighborly. Be the employee who does the work and doesn’t complain. Pay your bills. Do your part and enjoy life. Don’t speak one message and live another. Note the last line of Paul’s words in 1 Thessalonians 4:11–12. Do all you can to lead a peaceful life. Happy Mother's Day from Morgan Perez To the woman who waits for her babe to be born, Who lovingly washes the clothes to be worn, And pats her big belly and chats up a stranger, And jumps into mommyhood ignoring the danger, Of a life where ruthless love and worry elope, You teach us all the importance of hope. To the brand new Mom with stars in her eyes, And tears on her cheeks when her little one cries, You’ve never been handed something so good, And you swear then and there to do all that you should. You’ll make all her food, hand wash all his clothes. There will be no TV, crusty eyes, snotty nose. Everything will be wholesome, and clean, and organic, You’ll always know what to do, you won’t panic. And while motherhood won’t be all that it seems, You teach us all the value of dreams. To the Mom who lost her babe too soon, Who’d crush the Alps or rope the moon, To bring back that precious thing again, It’s a battle you fight, but never may win. To you who finally wipe your tears, And set aside your darkest fears, And try just like you did before, It’s you who shows us love is More. To the Armed Forces Mom who sleeps alone, Nursing baby, guarding phone. Hiding tears from tender hearts, Living life in fits and starts. To those strong enough to bear it all, To those who catch us when we fall. To those who wait on ship or plane, Smiling through forgotten pain, Urging little ones to wave, You who taught them to be brave. To those who adopt and foster moms too, Our collective hats are off to you. You lay it all out on the line: Your hopes and fears, your money and time. You give such a gift when you roll those dice, And one day you’ll wonder that you ever thought twice, About opening up your home and your heart, It is you who teach us where Love should start. To the Grandma who holds her child’s newborn, Who smiles wide as Time is torn, And her heart leaps back to the day she knew, That this was the best thing she’d ever do. Her tears are many, her joy complete, As she watches the ancient cycle repeat. Her maternal instinct will never abate. You teach us that moment is well worth the wait. To the moms who work, And the moms who don’t, To those that homeschool, And those that won’t, To the moms with no sick days, No subs, or relief, To the moms working through their depression or grief, To the moms at the school play, smiling and clapping, To those covered in spit up, fitfully napping. To those moms who are: Cooking, cleaning, Shopping, weaning, Stressing, nesting, Never resting, Clipping coupons, Making beds, Kissing knees, and cheeks and heads, Packing lunches, fixing pants, marveling over worms and ants, Holding tight to bicycle seats, Scrubbing toilets, baking treats, Drawing smiles through the tears, Working weeks, and months, then years, All of you who know the score, Motherhood’s not a job, it’s More. From the second that plus sign appears, until you look back over all the years, You know your life means more this way, Because every day is a Mother’s Day.
